Learning to swim is an important childhood milestone that can stay with your child for life, building skills and confidence that can help them embrace new challenges as they grow.
While swimming is an essential skill that combines safety, exercise, and recreation, for young children, it also builds self-esteem and social skills, and boosts cognitive health. For people of all ages, swimming promotes good mental health and strong cardiovascular health.
There are no downsides to learning to swim; however, finding the right program can mean the difference between a child who goes on to develop a lifelong love of the water and one who has a negative experience that makes them reluctant to get back in.
How to Choose a Swim School
How do you evaluate a swim school in Nashville and decide which program is right for your child?
Choosing the right swim school goes beyond Googling “Swim Schools Near Me.” Several other factors should be part of the decision-making process. First, look at the instructor-to-swimmer ratio for your child’s age and class level. Ask how instructors are trained and how the program introduces new skills to children who are nervous or hesitant. Ensure the facility is clean and family-oriented. Finally, and importantly, understand the school’s teaching philosophy, because not every learn-to-swim program approaches a child’s first experiences in the water the same way.
Some programs focus heavily on survival skills. Survival swimming programs, including Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) (not what we offer at Nashville Swim Academy), use conditioning and repetition to reinforce infants’ responses intended to help them survive an accidental fall into the water. These programs can involve repeated submersion, an approach that differs significantly from programs centered on gradual, positive exposure to the water.
In its 2026 Prevention of Drowning Technical Report, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that while infants can be conditioned to reflexively float on their backs following multiple sessions of repeated submersions, there is no evidence that this ability reduces infant drowning rates. The AAP also cautions that the repeated submersions required to teach the skill can result in negative aquatic experiences and are associated with lower subsequent swim competency.
Swim lessons in Nashville and access to Nashville swimming pools are one thing. But a program’s teaching philosophy, instructor quality, class size, and the amount of individual attention a child receives all shape whether learning to swim becomes something a child fears, tolerates, or genuinely enjoys.
At Nashville Swim Academy, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, supported, appropriately challenged, and celebrated for every success. Through positive reinforcement and progressive skill development, our FUNdamentals, SAFEty, and TECHnique levels help children build confidence while becoming safer and more capable in the water.
What Distinguishes an Award-Winning Swim Lessons Program
A great learn-to-swim program should be able to explain what it teaches, along with the “why” and the “how.” At Nashville Swim Academy, our award-winning approach reflects an understanding that learning to swim is both a physical and emotional process. That philosophy influences everything from instructor training and class sizes to our teaching methods and the design of our facility in The Nations.
Extensive Instructor Training
Every NSA instructor receives extensive in-house training beyond potential Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification to include swim instruction, water safety, early childhood development, and the psychology of learning to swim.
That’s important because not every child arrives at the pool excited to jump in. For some children, fear of the water is very real. A well-trained instructor doesn’t dismiss that fear or allow it to prevent a child from developing essential water-safety skills. Instead, they understand how to introduce achievable challenges and tangible experiences that move swimmers forward without overwhelming them.
Small Class Sizes
Small classes support that individualized approach without placing too much pressure on any one swimmer. Our Terrific 2s classes have two swimmers per instructor, three-year-old classes have no more than three, and 4–6s classes maintain a 4:1 ratio. Classes only increase to a maximum of 6 once swimmers are safe in the water and working on advanced skills and stroke technique.
Finding the Right Balance Between Safety and Confidence
Teaching children to swim doesn’t have to mean choosing between two extremes: waiting until a child decides they feel completely ready or pushing them through frightening experiences in the name of water safety.
Water safety is too important to postpone indefinitely. At the same time, children don’t need to be repeatedly overwhelmed to understand that water requires caution and specific skills. Just as we teach children how to cross a street safely rather than putting them in danger to demonstrate the consequences, swimming skills can be taught progressively.
This is where NSA’s approach differs from methods centered on repeated forced submersion and floating. Children are guided beyond their existing abilities because that’s how learning happens, but the process is positive, age-appropriate, and broken into manageable steps. The goal is to build real water-safety skills while protecting something equally valuable: a child’s confidence and enjoyment of the water.
A Purpose-Built, Family-Friendly Swim Facility
At our state-of-the-art facility in The Nations, even the water temperature is intentional, because it’s hard to teach a child how to swim when all they’re thinking about is how cold they are. Most local pools maintain an 80°F temperature, which is intended for lap swimming, not teaching swim lessons. By maintaining an optimal temperature (88°F) that is warm and comfortable, we remove that distraction so swimmers can focus on learning.
We also offer convenient parking with direct building and ramp access to make arriving with strollers easier. Our family-focused facility is exceptionally well-maintained and includes thoughtful details such as child-size toilet seats and step stools at check-in so kids can participate in the process.
Those details are all part of a larger philosophy. Children learn through experiences, and NSA’s environment is designed to encourage growing independence, interaction, and confidence from the moment a family arrives.
